July 2nd, 2008 -- How to Prepare your car for shipping

The car shipping process can be a painless experience with alittle bit of preparation. Spending some time preparing your car before the transport company arrives can prevent alot of unecessary damage to your car during shipment. Here are a few tips to make the car shipping process go smoothly.

  • Surprisingly your car needs to be cleaned before shipment. In order to get an accurate preshipping inspection the car needs to be cleaned. The interior should be free of any loose objects that may shift and cause damage during shipping.

  • When you are shipping a convertible, make sure the top is up and properly secured. Also if there are any rips or tears in the top, make sure to seal them before shipping to prevent any moisture from entering the vehicle.

  • Any cusomized accessories on the exterior of your car should be removed or secured for shipping. Items such as antennas, spoilers, ground effects, fog lights, all tire covers, car covers, grill covers, bike racks, ski racks, nonpermanent luggage racks, etc. It is very helpful if you can fold back your mirrors and retract any antennas that can't be removed.

  • Make sure the gas tank is at 1/4 tank or less. Like most shipping items, weight is a key factor for pricing. Most transport companies have priced the car with a minimal amount of extra weight including fuel.

  • All aftermarket alarms should be disabled or disconnected before shipping. Remember your driver will need a remote for your car if there is an alarm. Also be sure to advise the driver if your vehicle has any leaks. That way the driver can position your car to prevent fluids from dripping onto others.

  • Finally, be sure to get your drivers cell phone number so you can get updates along the route.

When your car arrives be sure to do a complete inspection of your vehicle with the driver before they leave. If there are any damaged items be sure to have them noted on the bill of lading with the drivers signature. Most companies will not honor any claims without this. If there are damages, it is important that you make the claim to the shipper or shipper's insurance within a few days. Most companies have time constraints on when insurance claims can be made. Hopefully if you follow some of this advice you will have a great car moving experience.
